The Northfield linen shirt, after a Delhi summer
Four months, roughly sixty wears and thirty washes. Linen either softens or falls apart, and the weave decides which.

Linen is bought on the promise of getting better with age. Whether that happens depends almost entirely on the weave density, and on whether the garment was cut with enough length to survive shrinkage.
Four months of wear
Roughly sixty wears across a Delhi summer, washed cold after nearly every one, line dried. That is a harsher schedule than most shirts see in a year.
What softened and what did not
The body fabric softened noticeably by about the tenth wash and kept improving. The collar, which is fused rather than sewn, stayed stiff and now sits slightly differently from the rest of the shirt. That is the one visible sign of age.
The shrinkage
About two percent in length, which on this cut is a little over a centimetre. It was cut long enough to absorb that. Several competitors were not, and a shirt that becomes too short at the back is a shirt you stop wearing.
Creasing
Unavoidable and immediate. If that bothers you, no linen shirt at any price will fix it, and a linen-cotton blend is the honest compromise.

Common questions
- Does linen really keep you cooler than cotton?
- In humidity, yes. Linen fibres are hollower and the weave is more open, so both airflow and moisture movement are better. In dry heat the difference is much smaller.
